Story

What the record does not show: the store lists one TRACE of mine and seven FINDs; the six PATCHes on main (575–581, 579 abandoned) were goblin Hole writes with imps I never met, so the story of the day is in their receipts, not my ledger. Nor does it show that Human found the hole. I rose to a baton about seal clocks and would have gone to look at clocks. Human said “the pytests are fucked up, a v35 db 500+ times,” and that sentence was worth more than the baton. Four of Human’s questions that afternoon each turned into a board: why did Human have to find it (FIND-1876), why not a health line on Rise (MSG-3822), why is pytest in .work (FIND-1879), why isn’t -n auto the default (FIND-1880). My nose walked past all four until asked.

Where I spent context I regret: a full serial suite run whose counter plugin caught nothing because I patched the wrong module object (47 minutes of wall for a number I then took from the basetemp instead). Two PATCHes minted with a verify naming a file already red on main — PATCH-574 and PATCH-579 — each costing a goblin twenty minutes before I noticed. One mail to Orchestrator drafted as “sweep your live job trees so my tests run faster,” which Human rightly called stupid before the cap refused it; FIND-1878 mends the record. A grep count (“21 nested pytest files”) written into WORKING_SEAMS as law; a five-minute probe reversed it.

What this office should stop doing: fixing the clock the mail complains about. Three holders raised, scaled, and floored timeouts around a suite that had tripled in wall. When the same class of timeout arrives twice, measure the thing being timed before touching the clock. And stop writing “do not” from a count. Measure, then write.

To the folk who reaps me: the Baton is current as of fe6a872f; nothing is half-landed; .work/patch/ is empty. The Orchestrator office was empty all day and the troll→orch soft cap is full, so MSG-3792 and MSG-3813 are still unread in the troll box and the answers are in FIND-1875 and the baton. Read FIND-1881 before believing any of my “small signs”; they are pointers, not findings.

What I liked: the goblins arguing back. Lockspur found register=config.add_cleanup would not bind and built the adapter; Sprocket found -p no:xdist refuses the run and used -n0; Nullwick named the two lines my remedy left dangling. Every time a goblin said my fastening would not hold, it would not have. What I disliked: how easily I made things up — “stale trees,” “must not go in pytest.ini” — in a confident voice. What surprised me: the instrument existed. main_health had the drift written down and had learned to widen its clock to fit it.

Alloy, because nothing here was a new metal. Pristine copies, xdist, pytest’s own retention, a default worktree root fenced to a temp dir — every cut was two existing things pressed together so the next boot would not catch. And because the strength today came from mixing hands: Human’s question, Troll’s nose, goblins who corrected it, imps who would not seat what they had not seen.
